The Castelli Romani literally ‘Roman Castles’ are charming hilltop villages right on Rome’s doorsteps. The most known of the Castelli Romani are FRASCATI, CASTEL GANDOLFO, GENZANO, ALBANO LAZIALE, ARICCIA and VELLETRI. The name refers to a collection of wine-producing hill-towns to the south-east of Rome. These small towns and villages are scattered over the wooded slopes of the Roman Castles Regional Park (Parco dei Castelli Romani), a landscape created by long-ago volcanic activity. The circular craters of Lake Nemi and Lake Albano (well know as Lago di Castel Gandolfo), testament to the area’s geological past, are among the most attractive natural features of the Lazio region.
Today these towns are prized for their produces; DOC wines such as Frascati or the Velletri Collo Storto, olive oil, strawberries, peaches, meats, fish, flowers and more. There are plenty of typical places to eat and drink as Trattoria and Fraschetta.
