The small town of Alberobello, in the southern region of Puglia, has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unusual districts of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area. It makes an interesting day-trip destination or a pleasant base for a few days – especially if you stay in a trullo of your very own. The Trulli are unique architectural structures with conical roofs made of limestone slabs. Trulli dot the landscape of the Itria Valley in Puglia but there are more than 1500 Trulli in the town of Alberobello. Many trulli are still lived in but some have been converted to typical restaurants and shops.
