Wines of Italy-November 2013

One of the greatest prides of the Italians are their grapes and their wines. Italians have been making wine for thousands of years, and they know a thing or two about enjoying it! There’s nothing better than a loud Italian dinner with great food and friends where everyone is slightly more animated from a few good glasses of wine. It’s enough to name a few such as Chianti, Brunello, Nobile di Montepulciano, Pinot Grigio, Amarone, Barolo, Spumante and also some local ones that are unknown. Wines of Italy is a 9-day-tour from Venice to Rome where you will visit the most significant “cantinas” of the northern region; Friuli, Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Lombardy, Piedmonet and Tuscany.

You will learn the story of “the grape”, the art of making wine and, as an “Italian  maker” would, enjoying it. You tour will be conducted by a wine expert.  Also, you will meet the wine grower who will show you the techniques of viticulture and explain the wine making process. During the tour, you will also have the opportunity to visit VENICE, the romantic city built on water, VERONA, the city of Romeo and Juliet, MONTEPULCIANO and PIENZA known for their “osterie” and cheese, and finally Depart – End date, the capital city known as the Eternal City. Italy is known as “Bel Paese”-‘Beautiful Country’, a land for both old and new lovers of art, food and fine wine. Discovering Italy will be a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Day 1– Arrive in Venice

Welcome to Venice's Marco Polo Int. Airport. Your airport transfer bus will be waiting for you at 9:30 am, 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm to take you to your hotel where you should rest or, if you wish, start exploring  the city on your own. Later in the afternoon, you will  meet our Tour Guide and your travel companions to leave the hotel for an escorted walking tour, the highlights of which are St. Mark’s Square & the byzantine Basilica, lavish Doge’s Palace & the Bridge of Sighs, followed by a special Welcome Dinner with wine at one of Venice’s lively restaurants.

Hotel: Splendid, Plaza, NH Laguna Palace, or similar (1 night)

Day 2– Northeast area “Veneto and Frilui”

This morning, leave the province of Venice to head northeast where the major white wines of Italy come from, in the hills of Udine, where you get full-bodied & fragrant white wines like Collio & Piccolit, or the red Ramandolo. The limestone in this area is perfect for Riesling, Muller-turgau, Traminer & Gewürztraminer, in addition to the most common varieties like Merlot, Pinot Noir & Cabernet. Enjoy a wine tasting with a visit of the cantina. In the afternoon, drive to Valdobbiadene, the Prosecco land (Treviso) where the typical sparkling wine from this region is made. Later, go to the Bassiano del grappa area to visit a distillery. Then, enjoy a short drive to the beautiful area of Lake Maggiore where we will spend the next two nights. Dinner will then be served in the hotel following this eventful day.

Hotel: Poiano Resort, Baia Verde, or similar (2 nights)

Day 3-  Verona and the Lake Garda area

Today, enjoy a walking tour with our Local Guide in Verona, the city famous for the Romeo & Juliet love story. See the famous balcony & the Arena. The hills between the Alps  & the Mediterranean Sea near the Lake Garda’s East Coast are a very prolific region of fine wines. Here, you’ll be among the very famous labels of Bardolino & Valpolicella (combination of grape varieties) or Recioto & Soave (delicate white wines). In the afternoon, enjoy wine tastings & a scenic drive through the area between Lake Garda & Lake Iseo where they also grow the Chiavennasca grape used to create the full-bodied and rich bouquet wines of Sfurzat & Valtellina. After, enjoy dinner in an authentic restaurant.

Days 4 – Franciacorta – Asti

Moving West, in the plain of River Po , we reach the section of Franciacorta in the town of Pavia where Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, & Chardonnay provide the famous Italian sparkling wine made classically or in the Champenois method, the same way asChampagne would be made. This afternoon, we go to the Asti’s area where sweet Moscato grapes grow & become Moscato D’asti. Right next door is where Brachetto & Barbera grapes come from. Tonight dinner will be served in the hotel's restaurant

Hotel: Spinerola, Tenuta la Romana, or similar (2 nights)

Day 5 – Northwest Area “Piedmont”

Today excurtion day to visit some pearls of this beutiful region of Piediment. The most common grape variety is Nebbiolo, known in this region since the 13th century, from which Barolo, Barbaresco, and many other wines are created. After the visit of the local Winery, lunch will be served at the local restaurant. This evening free time to enjoy at your own pleasure.

Day 6 – Tuscany and the Chianti Hills

This morning we leave the region of Piemonte for the beautiful Chianti area in the heart of the Tuscany region. Here is where we have time to visit some small villages with free time to enjoy the region at your leisure. In the late afternoon, we take a short ride to your hotel where you are sure to enjoy a true Italian dinner.

Hotel: CDH Radda, Tenuta di Ricavo, or similar (2 nights)

Day 7—Montepulciano, Pienza

Today, we will have a walking tour through the medieval streets of Montepulciano & its several “cantinas” & not far from here we will go to the little village of Pienza to discover its delicious homemade cheeses that pair perfectly with wine. Two  important Tuscany red wines grow in this area; Brunello Di Montalcino, a strong red wine made exclusively of Brunello grapes & has a long life (the first official great vintage was in 1888, 5 perfectly intact bottles have been kept), & Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano made from Prugnolo Gentile grapes, a Sangiovese clone, this wine is strong & sour when young then becomes more & more smooth & spicy with age.

Day 8– From Tuscany to Rome

This morning, leave the Tuscan region for Rome, the “Eternal City”, where our Local Guide will introduce you to the grandeurs of Roma.  View the Colosseum, the ancient Imperial Forum, the Circo Massimo & St. Peter’s Square. The small traditional Roman restaurants offer local cuisine & wines from the Castelli Romani area, a group of villages south-east of Rome where the Pope spends his summers. Among the most common autochthonous varieties here grow: the Trebiano, Malvasia, Cesanese, Sangiovese, & Montepulciano grapes, all of which are sometimes made smoother by Merlot & Ciliegiolo. We enjoy dinner tonight at a relaxed local restaurant & toast to the success of your great Italian wines tour.

Hotel: Massimo D’Azeglio, NH Midas, or similar (1 night)
